We recommend that most clarinet students begin lessons at 5 or older. The clarinet is the typically the easiest of the woodwinds instruments to begin on, because it requires less lung capacity to produce a clean tone than the other woodwinds instruments. It is important that a younger student’s hands also be big enough to properly play the instrument. Because of the upright way that the clarinet is played, and the fact that it shares many similarities with the saxophone – many clarinet players also double on the saxophone, and vice versa.
