Expert Instruction for All Ages and Skill Levels
We recommend that most flute students begin lessons at 7 or 8 and older. A major factor in playing the flute is determining whether a child has both the lung capacity and the finger size to play its many keys. Unlike the saxophone and clarinet, the flute is a reed-less wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. A curved head joint can allow a younger and smaller student to reach the lip plates while still maintaining a comfortable position. As the student grows in size the standard head joint can be attached at a later time.
