We generally recommend starting bass guitar lessons at age seven or older. The bass guitar is similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a longer neck length and four to six strings. Four string basses are the most common. While some recommend starting bass guitar later than a six string electric or acoustic guitar – we have found that starting on a smaller size bass guitar (1/2 or 3/4 size) it is actually easier for younger children to start on bass guitar than a six string guitar because only one string is being played at a time. Because of the close connection that a bass player has with the drummer in a band, it’s not unusual for a drum student to also learn the bass and vice versa!
